Gundam 00 Headcanon 1/?

 Okay, since Tumblr is short on Gundam 00 content and I have a lot of headcanons that have been floating in my head or tucked into various places in my fic (mostly The Island of Misfit Toys), I figured I’d put some on here.

 

So, first one– Setsuna’s language competencies.  I thought about this a lot, since the Gundams’ operating systems are clearly written in English, but everyone speaks Japanese.  I think that Setsuna probably can read the language used in Krugis, at least to some extent.  (I headcanon it Arabic, given its wide use in the Middle East, but I think it could be interesting to picture Krugis using a minority or regional language instead, especially given the whole Krugis/Azadistan minority/majority conflict.)

 

At any rate, by the time Al-Saachez recruited Setsuna and the other children, they would be old enough to be used to having regular religious instruction from their parents, and probably academic instruction at a village school. If he’d tried to end their education it would have caused more problems than it solved.  So, I’m guessing he continued teaching them but just cherry-picked the passages they were allowed to read.  

 

When Setsuna joined Celestial Being, he would have had to learn to speak Japanese to communicate, and to read English to operate his mobile suit.  But he’s joining an armed organization, not a college, so I can’t imagine he’s being taught or trying to learn any more language than he needs.  So, I think he probably only reads English, and doesn’t really learn Japanese reading or writing beyond the basics.  So, he can speak two languages fluently and read/write two languages fluently–but they aren’t necessarily the same languages.
