[archiveofourown.org profile] FabHawk said: *imma gonna keep throwing characters at you* Axel from Kingdom Hearts

*Disclaimer: I’m about halfway through watching a gameplay vid of KH2, and the only other games I’ve seen are KH1 and KH:COM. So if any of this turns out to be more canon than I know, don’t spoil me! I’d like to find out myself.*

Headcanon A:  realistic

Axel gives the impression that he does the most collateral damage of the Organization.  He gives this impression very carefully, and with admirable control.  He’s in fact very aware that his powers are very good for collateral damage, and if he leaves a bunch of half-burned out buildings behind him, those are deliberate. He fights people inside the Castle, after all. He knows how to control his fire when he has to.

Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious

During KH2 Axel, in the pursuit of trying to sound friendly enough to interact with Kairi, actually attempts to practice a friendly voice in front of a mirror.

Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends

Related to the previous headcanon, part of the reason his friendly voice still sounds vaguely menacing is that he doesn’t have a lot of actual experience with friendly voices.  (Roxas sounded friendly sometimes, but it just sounds weird when Axel tries to impersonate him.  Who else is he going to impersonate? Larxene?)

Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.

All of my hopes edge too close to spoiler territory.  Maybe someday he learns how to be slightly less of a trash fave and a bit of a better person?

Headcanon A:  realistic

Shinichi doesn’t have a lot of regrets about deciding to pursue detective work over soccer, but there are a few times, just after becoming Conan, when he has a bad day and he wonders.

Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious

He lowkey enjoyed riding around on that giant dog and kind of wishes the Mouris would let him get a pet. It would be softer than the skateboard, and the kids would probably like it too.

Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends

The stupid, stupid recklessness on cases started out as him forgetting he was tiny, but evolved into him disregarding it instead. It’s a control thing, a way of fighting against the limitations of his own body–if he can still manage the things he used to be able to do, then he wins.  Admitting that he’s endangering himself would be a concession, one that he’s less willing to make the longer he remains stuck as Conan.

Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.

If Shinichi and Kaito aren’t actually related, Toichi was at least a close enough family friend to babysit him as a kid.  This is not a novel headcanon, but I don’t care, it’s dearly held regardless.

Anonymous said: Omg, please do the ridiculous AU version of Hakuba Saguru also for the headcanon meme? I love your ridiculous Hakuba.

Thank you, I love him too! Please note that this post is full of Riddle in Reverse and Steeplechase spoilers! (I will get back to work on those when my health gets back in gear)

Headcanon A:  realistic

Hakuba is basically the mom friend who doesn’t know how to take care of himself. He’ll tell you to remember to eat your vegetables and get a good night’s sleep, but then he’ll spend all night working on a case and do all sorts of other reckless things that he would yell at you for.

Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious

When he first starts working with the police department, he has a hard time remembering that he is supposed to be following the law. He’s so used to being able to do things with that are completely illegal that he just completely forgets that there are rules you have to follow when you’re part of the police department, especially when your adult colleagues are watching. He keeps thinking things like “ this would be so much simpler if we could just hack their computers,”  and then remembering that he can’t do that now.

Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends

He’s never going to make friends with Mouri. Mouri smokes too much,  and cigarette smoke, really any kind of smoke, will always be a trigger for his PTSD,  at least to some extent. To be honest, it will be easier for him to spend time around Shinichi once he is able to move out of the Mouris’ house. On bad days, he probably has to ask Conan to either avoid meeting with him physically, or take a shower at the professor’s and change into clothes from there before he does.

Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.

Realistically he’s a little bit too mature to actually get petty revenge on Kaito’s mom for the whole Black Crow incident. In my heart, though, he makes her life as difficult as he possibly can.  He also does this for certain other people he does not like, some of whom have not yet appeared in the fic.

When Haruka isn’t in his uniform, he prefers loose, comfortable clothes. A lot of his aesthetic choices are actually comfort-based because he doesn’t have the energy to expend on trying to look fancy.

Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious

Haruka is the sole and specific reason that several all-you-can eat buffets in town now have an upward limit on what “all you can eat” means.

Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends

Haruka has a lot of insecurities about himself as a friend, since he’s pretty low on energy and sometimes just ends up at the hospital for weeks at a stretch, so he sometimes has doubts about his friendships with the rest of the Yuukei Quartet.

Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.

Post-Daze, Haruka does permanently need a wheelchair, and while this part is realistic and possibly canon, the non-canon part is him moving into the red-brick house with the rest of the quartet, who promptly make the place as wheelchair accessible as possible.  (I’ve mentioned this once a while ago) And they all live happily from then on.

Anonymous said: ooh, Hakuba Saguru for the meme?

(Guess who has to remind herself to do the canon version and not my ridiculous AU version, XD)

Headcanon A:  realistic

Hakuba specializes in theft and fraud; he never specifies what kind of cases he previously solved during the Detective’s Koshien and I firmly believe that a lot of what he did overseas involved remote detective work and recovery of stolen objects and money. He has solved murders before, but he isn’t a murder detective in the way that Kudou and Hattori are.  If he joins the police, he’ll actually be joining Nakamori’s division.

Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious

Hakuba is functionally bilingual in Japanese and English, but his Japanese slang has a fair amount of gaps when he first comes to the country, since he mostly practiced Japanese with adult relatives and through television.  What I’m saying is that there are certain unpleasant slang terms that he’s sure, based on tone of voice, must mean something terrible, but he’s never learned the meaning of from any source of tutoring he’s ever had.  Anyone who’s ever been to public high school will realize that this becomes a problem rather quickly. (Fortunately, the internet is useful in this regard)

Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends

He’s never been precisely good with people, particularly those his own age, so Kaito and the group of classmates that gather around him are his first real experience with friendships not born of constantly attending the same high-society functions or being in the same study groups. He’s quite sure that Kaito’s just attempting to get inside his guard. The problem is that it’s working, and he genuinely likes the thief he came to Japan to arrest.

Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.

Hakuba is, at this point, not so much trying to arrest KID as he is to keep the heists from spiraling out of control.  He’s conflicted about arresting KID but he cares too much about everyone involved in heists to stop attending completely.

Fai struggled in Yama.  Another world with chopsticks, Eastern-style armor, and other things he doesn’t know how to do, and this time he couldn’t even ask for help! Kurogane probably had to demonstrate how to put on the armor.  Repeatedly.

Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious

Sure, Fai was hiding his magic by saying “hyuuuuu” instead of whistling, but he also just kinda got to like saying it.  He’s not even trying to annoy Kurogane anymore, that’s just a bonus.  He likes the way it sounds.

Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends

On one hand, losing an eye pretty much does away with those moments of early-morning confusion when he looks into the mirror and thinks he’s seeing his twin staring back.  On the other, it tosses several of his plans for bringing the real Fai back out the window, because he absolutely refuses to subject his brother to living in a body he’s damaged.

Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.

They do make it to a world where there’s both a Fai and a Yui someday. Fai expected to be bitter, jealous, hit hard by grief–but instead, he’s just so grateful that he got to see this, and that there are versions of him and his brother somewhere who weren’t touched by tragedy.

tournamentsofroses said: Marie and/or Soma for headcanon meme?

Here’s both, though I lost the post halfway through so it took forever!

Soma Peries

Headcanon A:  realistic

During the four-year timeskip, Sergei made a mission of giving Soma as many normal experiences as he could jam into their daily lives.  They went to zoos and theme parks and every kind of restaurant in the HRL.

Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious

Soma is considered a Strong Female Role Model in the HRL, which is actually fitting, except that some bright-spark PR person thought it would be cool to send her to some schools. After that, well…there were a few discussions about how much detail about battlefields was appropriate for children, and then Soma was quietly taken off of that particular rotation.

Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends

Soma actually quite looked forward to meeting the son that Sergei held in such high esteem. Anyone he loved that much had to be a great man. She was disappointed when he seemed to hate her on sight.  (Let’s not get into how she felt about later events)

Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.

Soma’s still inside Marie somewhere. (Part II of this is under Marie ^^)

Marie Parfacy
Headcanon A:  realistic

Marie has some practical and muscle memory leftover from Soma, but it’s not hers, and if she thinks too hard about what she’s doing, she suddenly stumbles mid-action.  It’s disorienting, to say the least, and the adjustment period is a mess.

Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious

Marie has also not had food since a very young age.  Space food is delicious to her now.  Yes, even that one flavor of dehydrated soup that Setsuna F. “People are starving in refugee camps right as we speak eat the d*** rations” Seiei won’t touch.

Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends

Marie told Allelujah to go on that escape pod. She wanted him to be free, even if she couldn’t be.  When they’re both adults, and she finds out the whole story of what happens, she blames herself a bit.

Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.

Not so much unrealistic as noncanon: Soma and Marie work out a timeshare on the body.  It takes a few years and they need a set of rules for it to work, but it does eventually settle into a routine.

[personal profile] dandelionfunky said: Got any headcanons for Hohenheim? (Brotherhood/manga version)

Headcanon A:  realistic

Resembool was a giant series of mistakes. Hohenheim usually avoided people as sharp as Pinako–they were fun, sure, but they were smart enough to figure him out.  But he’d slipped, and ended up with a friend. As for falling in love …he’d had feelings since Xerxes fell, but he’d always reminded himself of what he was, and that had been the end of that. But Trisha persisted, and he found it harder and harder to resist when he wanted a family so badly…

Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious

You know that Tumblr post about vampires who miss historical events.  Like, they were alive at the time of various revolutions, but they were in a completely different country? That’s Hohenheim.  He at least tries to keep on top of the news but that was harder back before printing presses, and sometimes regime changes happened so quickly…he’s gone into countries fully expecting them to have a completely different form of government than they currently did.

Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends

Hohenheim is aware of how he looks, now.  An older man with a well-trimmed beard and fashionable glasses, wearing a conservative but well-cut suit. He looks educated and well-off.  It doesn’t matter how much time passes, though.  A thousand years on, and he’s still sure someone will see straight through all the affectations to the scruffy, dust-coated slave dressed in rags underneath.

Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own

He, Al, and Ed had a detailed and meaningful conversation about their feelings offscreen. Roy, as erstwhile guardian of Hohenheim’s children, may have also participated.

@mirrorfalls said: Ran Mouri.

Headcanon A:  realistic

After the second or third time she had to actively use karate on a case, Ran started shifting her training focus to incorporate not only things that would be effective and legal in regulation matches but also things that would work on a real assailant.

Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious

Especially if you take the movies as canon, Ran is probably an Internet Cryptid™ in the sense that there’s stories about a brown-haired teenage girl doing impossible things that show up on various message boards once in a while. Maybe someone even got a really blurry photo of her kicking out that car window.  Ran’s definitely the type who doesn’t spend a lot of time on the internet, so she has no idea.  Sonoko knows and thinks it’s the best thing ever.

Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends

Ran puts up with Shinichi’s increasingly unacceptable behavior as a romantic interest/boyfriend in part because of her own family situation. She knows she doesn’t want to end up like her own parents, who refuse to tolerate one another’s bad points whatsoever, so she’s swung too far the other direction and started putting up with things from Shinichi that she knows aren’t fair to her.

Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.

At this point, it’s not that Ran doesn’t suspect, or for that matter, that she isn’t pretty darn sure.  She’s just tired of Conan diverting her.

Some Akako headcanon-discussion/meta because it occurred to me that the part she plays in Riddle in Reverse involves a fair amount of my thoughts about her.

In canon, Akako’s powers are explained a little bit, but her society and what exactly happened to her parents is never made clear.  I’ve seen cool headcanons around but none really match mine, so here we go.

First, I take Akako’s age as read—she’s 17.  I think her parents probably died doing something related to magic—maybe there was infighting with other magicians, maybe they tried summoning something big, I don’t know and it’s not too relevant, because, given the fact that Akako can’t let herself cry without losing her magic, she literally wasn’t allowed to be upset about it.  By the time canon rolls around, she’s buried any trauma pretty deep, and we never get any glimpses.

Whatever happened, though, happened when she was in middle school or so.  She learned social skills and basic human interaction from them, but most of her magic is self-taught.  This means two things—1) she has no measure for comparison and 2) nobody really taught her to be responsible with her powers.  These factors combined explain the attraction spell she apparently puts out 24/7.   Something like that, which manipulates multiple people’s mental states has to be high energy—but I bet Akako’s never thought about the fact that spells the books say are “difficult” don’t seem to be for her.  And as for ethics and responsibility, I can’t honestly believe that an entire society of magic-users are chaotically evil enough to have constant competing attraction spells “on” all the time—so Akako’s probably disregarding either a social or actual taboo because no one taught her not to.

Akako is lonely, and she throws her power around because she has so much of it but nothing especially interesting or productive to do with it (Drawing in all those boys is neither–she doesn’t even seem to enjoy the attention, much less reciprocate, and it’s clearly not a challenge).  Aiding KID at least gives her something to do with the near reality-warping levels of magic we see her throw around.  And, you know, his second-hand advice from his late father and/or his own advice occasionally nudges her toward better choices.

As a final note, and for my own sanity, I don’t headcanon the thing she summons as actually being Lucifer.  It’s a spirit, maybe even an imp, that has an affinity for fortunetelling and is weak enough to not set off the truly impressive wards Akako’s parents left behind on her house. It just responds to Lucifer because it gets yelled at less that way.

Everyone has their own ideas of what kind of music the characters like, and I honestly think it’s more fun that way, but I wanted to think about when the characters first experienced it, and how.

The Meisters vary a lot.  Setsuna’s town probably had a few elders with old, near-broken instruments–and one or two nearly-broken radios that occasionally picked up a staticky music station or two.  Neil and Lyle lived in an Irish city–they probably have childhood memories of going to family pubs with live musicians.  Tieria’s first experience was probably another member of Celestial Being leaving their music playing in a common area.  The first experience Allelujah remembers is probably soft classical music being piped through the sleeping quarters in an attempt to stimulate the young Super-Soldiers’ brain function.  Saji’s first experience was probably children’s songs tapes.

The Trinities probably found a radio station entirely by accident while looking for information, and then liked it.  Marina’s mother sang to her–she was probably where Marina got her love of singing from.  I don’t want to go through the whole cast, but the idea intrigues me.

Okay, so I specifically wrote this up for @hawk-in-a-tree, who is in the process of watching DC and MK because we’ve been pulling each other into fandoms as a pastime for a while now, but I figured I’d post it publically in case it was of interest to anyone else. I’m also gonna incorporate some edited version of this into updated Ch. 1 A/Ns of Steeplechase, in particular, since what canon you need to know has changed slightly since the first chapter (oops characters from later in the series showed up). The timeline of the fic is slightly sketchy because I’m bad at continuity sometimes, but I’ve been trying to be good at spoilers at least.

So, without further ado, the absolute minimum amount of DCMK canon you need to read my Riddle in Reverse fic series:

Riddle in Reverse:

The fic is primarily based on the Magic Kaito 1412 anime, and there are really very few episodes of it you can skip—pretty much every episode is referenced in either this fic or the sequel, either directly or in terms of characterization.  In addition, however, please watch:

  • Akako’s Delivery Service (MK ch. 17/MK special 9)
  • Dark Night (MK ch. 27-28/MK special 12)
  • Sunset Mansion/The Gathering of the Detectives (DC ch. 299-302/DC ep. 219)
  • Detectives Koushien/Three Days with Hattori Heiji (DC ch. 562-566/DC ep 479)

Steeplechase:

This fic pulls on the same sources as the previous fic, so I’m assuming you’ve already watched them.  In addition, I’m using @silverbulletsama’s Detective Conan Watch Guide, which is a good way to speed-watch the series.  You can use that method to more quickly get to episode 561, which is the most recent episode you absolutely need to read the fic. (Please note that you actually could watch the series, or at least the best bits of it, more quickly than that watchlist if you don’t care about things like spoilers and linear timelines, but this list is for hawk-in-a-tree, who is being sensible and trying to do this in order and with details)

In addition, please watch and/or read:

  • Clockwork Heart (MK ch. 3) [optional, but several jokes will make more sense]
  • Moonlight Sonata Murder Case (Manga 18, Anime 11)
  • ¥1,000,000,000 Robbery Case (Manga: 013-016) [in place of or after episode 13]
  • Bond of Fire Case (Manga: 150-153, Anime: 77-78)
  • Stabbed Wallet Case/Naniwa Serial Murder Case (Manga: 185-188, Anime: 118)
  • Detective Conan Movie 3: The Last Wizard of the Century
  • Detective Conan Movie 13: The Raven Chaser

Finally, there will be some minor spoilers in the fic for places slightly past Ep. 561:

  • While the fic is set at a point in canon at which most readers had guessed the mystery regarding Okiya Subaru, if you have not, please keep reading canon until that mystery is revealed or you figure it out, unless you are prepared to be spoiled.
  • There are some minor spoilers regarding who is involved in the Mystery Train Arc (DC ch. 818-824/DC eps 701-704), though they are fairly nonspecific.
  • There may be discussion of later developments in the Black Org plotline, in terms of clues they find out about the organization and its members.  I’m not good at keeping track of what comes up when.  No Black Org members that aren’t introduced by 561 will appear, but that’s as much as I can promise.
  • Finally, when the London Arc (DC ch. 818-824/DC eps 701-704) is discussed, I spoil a few things regarding how the major case concludes, because I’m salty forever about that arc.  Skip the conversation in Chapter 21 regarding what resources they have in England and you should be fine.

SORRY JUST HAD TO SEND A MESSAGE CAUSE i have so many feelings on GSD (most of them negative - ) don't even get me started on rey

Sending an ask is fine!! I still have a lot of feelings about GSD, as it was my Very First Gundam, so even though I’m not actively in the fandom, nor was I ever really other than, like, two really subpar fanfics, I like the opportunity to talk about it.  My love for Gundam Seed Destiny is the love of nostalgia–it wasn’t actually that good, but it meant a heck of a lot to me at the time.  Besides getting me into Gundam, it presented a fundamentally different narrative about war than anything else I’d been exposed to up to that point, and it was in some ways formative for me in that sense.  Narratively and as a piece of writing, though…it was not great.

Shinn’s arc was a trainwreck and it didn’t have to be.  He wasn’t some sort of irredeemable villain from the get-go, he was a hurting kid with PTSD and an impulsive streak.  Athrun was trying to get him to make better choices, but Athrun was affiliated with Orb, Shinn had trauma, and Durandal was playing everyone.  Shinn was manipulated by Durandal, but also took reprehensible actions on his own.  So it’s more complicated than him just being a victim of Durandal, but it’s also false to say he wasn’t one.  I know from an Anime Insider interview from when the show was released that someone on the production staff (head writer or director, I think?  It’s been years and my hard copy’s not here)  basically said that Shinn was a portrait of the problems with modern Japanese youth, that he was “entitled” and craved “acceptance” and “approval.” I remember being annoyed by that when I read it and it still annoys me.  If they were trying to portray Shinn as entitled, I’m not sure they did a good job.  Traumatized war orphans who live on their combat ship just don’t read as entitled to me.  His tendency to seek approval constantly and especially from the wrong people is among his tragic flaws, but it’s also among Athrun’s, and yet things turn out very differently for those two characters.

Personally, I find Shinn most interesting as a counterpoint to both Athrun and Kira, in the sense of this is how their arcs could have gone wrong.  I am not certain this is what the show was trying to convey, but I’m a former English major and texts are sometimes more fun when you read for what’s actually in them rather than authorial intent.  Kira’s arc in GS is plagued by the threat of the Earth Forces wanting to turn him into a glorified tool.  Shinn’s arc, in an indirect way, is that made real in the form of Durandal’s manipulations (and Rey’s, though Rey is also simultaneously complicit and a victim).  The difference between them is the allies Kira had with him (vs. Shinn’s allies, who aren’t all truly his allies, aren’t close to begin with and are picked off one by one through the show, until only Luna and Meyrin survive the series, and only Luna stays with Shinn).    Athrun, meanwhile, makes poor decisions about who to follow, but also is ultimately able to realize when his side has morally gone beyond the pale, and to use the connections he had from childhood (Kira and Lacus) with the other side to reorient himself to a side that matches his moral convictions (vs. Shinn, whose only remaining childhood connection, the cell phone recording of his younger sister, is a tool that Durandal uses to manipulate him toward further morally questionable decisions).  Shinn is a testament to the chaotic nature of war, a reminder that our faves, while good people, also got lucky.  If they’d ended up in the wrong places at the wrong times, they could have ended up like him, or at least in similar situations.

REEEEEEY.  My feelings about him are so complicated and at the same time boil down to screw Ulen Hibiki.  A lot of my GS and GSD feelings boil down to that honestly.  Rey deserved better.  Rey also did some very, very screwed-up things and the fact that he was actively aiding Durandal in turning Shinn into a human UXB shouldn’t be overlooked, but he was also one of the only people who was really kind to Shinn. The fact that he helped Shinn rescue Stellar makes me think that under all the manipulation and pain and screwed up things that never should have happened to either of them, Shinn and Rey’s friendship was real, to some extent.  In an environment with no Durandal, it could have been good for them both.

It’s been like 10 years since I watched this show why on earth do I still have this many emotions about it???

(Disclaimer to anyone who comes across this in the tag: I am not an active participant in the GS or GSD fandoms, and know nothing about the current discourse trends. I’m not really interested in fighting anyone on this, it is just my opinion.  Lemme be wrong on the internet in peace if that is what you feel I am.)

Same.

I was having these thoughts when the promotional trailers came out.  I loved Kingsman–like, it was a bit gory for me, but the spy tropes and stylized fighting and completely extra gadgets are all very up my alley–so I am looking forward to it, but also, I’m sorry, when I watch the movie a crossover is happening in my head.  I don’t know that it’s even a choice anymore.

It would work, though, right?  I mean, DC is just as bad about the gadgets, and given that Akai is apparently the best sniper alive in DC-verse, there is no chance that Kingsman doesn’t at least know about him.  Since I’ve not seen the movie itself yet and only know what the promos tell us about the US agency, I’m hesitant to actually start sketching out a crossover, but I can think of several ways it could be workable, and someone should write it.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
(comment on a reblog of Kingsman: The Golden Circle promotional posters, linked in the above post)

On one hand, I love Kingsman with all of my spy-obsessed heart.

On the other, why’d it have to be alcohol-based codenames?  There’s no use for it.  The Detective Conan part of my brain’s turned on now.  I’m going to have to spend half the movie reminding myself they’re not Black Org.

Steeplechase is in its final arc.  This story is about Kaito bringing Hakuba home.  Granted, it’s also about a lot of other things, and I do plan to resolve as many of the emotional arcs, side plots, etc. as I can, but that was always the main point of this story.  Granted, getting Hakuba home means more than getting him there physically; it involves convincing him that this is home.   The story has quite a few chapters left in it still–there’s a lot of conversations left to be had in the wake of Hakuba’s return, and I’m not planning to rush through them.  Also I made promises to miladyRanger about the epilogue, and those date back to 2014 or possibly early 2015.   So, given my current posting speed, making firm predictions on whether the story will end this year might be pushing it.  But it won’t still be going this time next year.

I’m not going to write another chaptered fic for this verse, or at least, I don’t have plans to do so at the moment.  When I finish Steeplechase, I’d like to take a bit of a break and catch up on ficcing for some of the other fandoms I’ve been neglecting in favor of this fic, and possibly even poke at some original projects again.  But when I come back, I have pretty fleshed-out plans for oneshots set in this ‘verse, and I’d very much like to write them.  While putting together background for this fic, miladyRanger and I wrote some backstory that didn’t really have a place in the fic–adding it would’ve been intrusive and unnecessary, so I left it out.  Also, it would just be fun to write some lower-pressure scenarios with these versions of the characters, as opposed to what I’ve been doing with Steeplechase.  There’s a lot I like about the character relationships I’ve set up in this verse and a lot I’d like to be able to explore with them.  So yeah, I’ll probably write in this verse after this, but it might not be on this scale.

…Frankly, if I write on this scale again, next time I might want it to be original fiction.  I really enjoyed this, and I’m so glad everyone else has too, but I can’t emphasize how much the length was not planned.

Ignoring any and all character deaths, focusing on the main casts of both (FFXV because I don’t know side characters as well; TRC because there are too many)

 the characters i’d ship

Still no ships.  I’m really not a shipper, heh…

the characters who would be BFFs
Luna and Sakura!!  Sakura would think Luna was the coolest person ever and Luna would love Sakura’s cheerfulness.  On the other hand, I feel like Sakura and Noct would also get along well due to the fact that they both get how it is to be sleepy all the time.

Presuming that there wasn’t a misunderstanding to cause conflict, Gladio and Kurogane would become immediate Sparring Bros.

Not so much BFFs but Fai would 100% try to mother Prompto.  He knows “insecure and trying too hard to hide it” when he sees it.

Iggy and Syaoran would get along famously.  Syaoran would have all the questions about Eos and Iggy would have all the answers and also be thrilled to have an interested pupil.

Gentiana and Yuuko would get along and we should all be terrified.

the characters who would be enemies
If Ardyn had access to Yuuko, he’d probably try to make a wish.  She would not be amused.  Especially since Ardyn’s not particularly fond of following rules and tends to think he’s smarter than everyone.

Heaven help the Astrals if Sakura’s there when one of them gets summoned.  Canon, she can talk to upset nonhuman things–but she’s going to want answers for why summoning/asking for blessings is so hard on Noct/Luna, and she won’t approve of what she’s gonna hear.  (She’d probably start yelling at them before she remembered they were, in fact, gods)

If Ravus was acting like he was in canon, Kurogane would end up fighting him, but also giving him fighting tips and artificial arm maintenance tips, probably mid-fight.

the characters who would be allies
Unless there were feather shenanigans or a misunderstanding in the way, I can see the TRC group and the FFXV boys being allied.

the characters who would be allies, but reluctantly
Not so much reluctant allies, but if Fai encountered Ardyn…I think he’d recognize a little bit of himself, like, the worst possible version of himself, in the guy.  It would scare the hell out of him but he’d also understand it and…yeah.

Assuming Sakura didn’t get a chance to talk to the Astrals, they’d probably reluctantly support the TRC crew being successful, because they a) want them off their world and b) don’t want Fei Wang Reed screwing up the timeline and thus undoing their plan to end the Scourge.  (Guess whose favorite character isn’t the Astrals?  It’s me!!)

the characters who would drive each other bananas
Ignis and Fai would probably try to get along since they’re both the “mother” of their respective groups and Fai likes cooking too, but their personalities are a little bit too incompatible for that, honestly….I mean, Fai has fun, but Ignis just kinda seethes and reminds himself not to summon weapons.

Syaoran and Noct wouldn’t actually get along that well, I don’t think.  Syaoran is made of intellectual curiosity and really confused about how Noct isn’t even vaguely interested in all of this mythology and magic and how it works?  Since he’s the most connected to all of it?  Noct just wants to be left alone and play phone games/sleep/fight the dang monster already.

the characters i think are the most alike
I think Gladio and Kurogane, it’s just that Gladio needs more of Kurogane’s fleshed-out character development arc.

my favorite character from each fandom & how i think they would get along
I’ve had a hard time picking in FFXV, but I think it is probably Prompto.  Fai’s been my favorite in TRC since high school.

Like I said, Prompto sets off every single one of Fai’s Mom Instincts.  He sees the times when Prompto’s smiles are forced for what they are, and recognizes his efforts at lightening the mood for the group’s sake as well.  It’s adorable to him, and also a little familiar in a way that’s just short of painful, so it’s time to look after the kid.  Prompto takes to the attention like a duck to water, because most of the positive attention he’s had in his life is from his friends who are basically peers.  Fai, who’s clearly older than them, is more like a parent even than Ignis, and it’s…nice.  The fact that the attention means this much to Prompto doesn’t escape Fai’s notice, not for a second, so he just increases the thing, and Prompto loves it.

 the characters i’d ship

Ehhhhh.  Don’t really have crossover ships for this, either.

the characters who would be BFFs

Tsuyu is going to be Seto’s new favorite person.  Not only does she always say what she thinks (no confusing contrasting thoughts) but she’s a frog.

Midoriya get along super-well with Ayano, since they’re both earnest, determined, self-sacrificing, hero-idolizing nerds.  Uraraka and Momo, the relentlessly cheerful girls who got into their current lines of work with their family’s finances in mind, would also bond.  Jirou and Kido would also get along really well, I think, although it’s Hagakure and Kido who end up bonding over powers.  Kaminari and Takane bond over both their similar powers and their awful grades.

Mary would glom onto Shinshou and attempt to pass on Seto’s “you’re not a monster” lesson; he’d probably be surprised enough that it would at least partly work.

All Might would teacher-adopt the whole Dan, honestly.

the characters who would be enemies

Honestly, both series end up along the same basic moral lines. The Dan would have the same basic objections to the Villain Alliance and Hero Killer Stain that the UA Kids do.  While the UA kids wouldn’t have a personal grudge against the Snake of Clearing Eyes, they generally object to murder, so they’d also be enemies with him.  Same for the adult heroes.

the characters who would be allies
I’m pretty sure that, given a chance, the Dan would totally attend UA.  So the Dan would be up for allying with the BnHA cast.  As for the UA kids and teachers, they might think that the way the Dan sneaks around and does “missions” is too much like vigilantes at first, but I think once the Dan explains that there aren’t Pro Heroes or Hero Laws in their reality, they’d be pretty okay with allying with the Dan, too.

the characters who would be allies, but reluctantly
The Villain Alliance and the Snake of Clearing Eyes would try to manipulate one another, and probably both would end up getting at least some of what they wanted out of the other.

the characters who would drive each other bananas
Ayano Does Not Like Bakugou.  He makes Seto think of the kids who used to bully him and Seto won’t speak up for himself of course…so Ayano keeps him well away from Seto by force of personality and following him around when necessary.  Bakugou doesn’t like this.

Kano’s rulebreaking tendencies offend Iida’s sensibilities.

the characters i think are the most alike
Actually, I think I’m gonna go with Momo and Uraraka.  Both of them go into really tough industries with the goal of supporting their families, both of them are super upbeat and cheerful, and both of them are actually really good at strategy.  In a meta-narrative sense, they both end up being the fanservice girls for their respective series.

my favorite character from each fandom & how i think they would get along
Ayano and All-Might?  Ayano would love All-Might, because here’s one of her childhood heroes brought to life.  But if she met him as Toshinori she’d immediately go into mother-hen mode and start trying to take care of him before she even realized what she was doing.  As for All-Might, again, he’d adopt the whole Dan, and he’d find Ayano’s admiration flattering and a little overwhelming, because it becomes clear quickly that she’s as much a hero to the rest of her friends as he is to her, and it’s…a lot, to have the admiration of a person like that.

Anonymous said: Gundam IBO Gundam Wing

Okay, for the record, setting this in a fictional timeline in which everyone is simultaneously alive and present. Also I didn’t watch the last half-season of IBO so I am unaware of things that happened in that period of time.

the characters i’d ship
Honestly probably no one.  Honestly, I’m not much of a shipper, even in crossovers.

the characters who would be BFFs
Relena and Kudelia, definitely–they have very similar backstories and positions and they tend to try to make allies first before making enemies.  Also probably Atra and Catherine Bloom, as both of those two are “caring sister” types with spines of absolute freakin’ steel underneath (and a fair bit of childhood trauma; Catherine’s an orphan who grew up in a circus after all).  Those two would probably also get along with Biscuit and Hilde, who are smart and used to hanging back in support roles and would also be friends, I think.

Lady Une and Fumitan would get each other.  They might not talk much but they’d hang out.  Their personalities are similar enough.

Sally Po, Merribit Stapleton, and Nady Yukinojo Kassapa would form a sort of informal commiseration group, most likely with alcohol, dedicated to the subject of “why won’t these kids stay out of the fighting.”  If you adhere to Sally’s (ridiculously young for her appearance and role) canon age, she can have sparkling grape juice.

the characters who would be enemies
With regard to Treize, Zechs, McGillis and Gaelio…well, it depends on which point in canon I’m considering them to be at exactly how many of them are fighting each other, but it’s safe to say that during a crossover the protagonists wouldn’t actually have to worry about them, because they’d be too busy fighting each other, in one configuration or another.   All of them are capable of being goal-oriented but are able to be derailed by a good challenge, which the others present.  Whoops.

We’re just going to hope that Relena doesn’t find out about the Turbines.  She will jump to very bad conclusions and probably attempt to “liberate” a bunch of very capable robot pilots and support staff from their place of work and chosen refuge.  She would not like Naze, and even if she found out that the harem thing was a cover, she’d still probably disapprove.  I think she’s capable of learning the value of subterfuge but in canon that isn’t a thing she’s yet managed.

the characters who would be allies
Quatre and Orga would very quickly work out that there were enough similarities in their goals to make collaboration worthwhile, and further, that the other was sharp enough to make collaboration a rewarding experience.

They would probably end up making an arrangement by which the entire Tekkadan and the Gundam pilots would be somewhat allied.  In a formal fashion that wasn’t too binding and allowed for the fact that Quatre’s got a Heero and a Duo and Orga’s got a Mika and a Eugene.

the characters who would be allies, but reluctantly
Lucretia Noin, Crank Zent, Naze Turbine and Amida Arca are reluctantly invited to the drinking-and-commiseration group.  Noin’s and Zent’s invitations are reluctant because they keep fighting the children, Naze’s is so because he “runs a harem” and lets some of the 18yos in it fight (and Amida is party to it).  Naze, of course, isn’t about to tell strangers about the whole flying women’s shelter thing, and Merribit and Nady are keeping his secrets for him, so Sally still objects to his inclusion.

Mika and Heero are too alike and too paranoid to trust one another but since both groups are in some senses fighting for their respective sets of colonies both of them would have to buckle down and get along.

the characters who would drive each other bananas
Wufei and…really, most of the Tekkadan would absolutely grate on each other’s nerves.  It gets exaggerated in fic, Wufei doesn’t go around yelling “Honor!” in canon, but ideologically, he does fight according to a code of honor, the same way Crank Zent did.  Zent’s death was a demonstration of how foreign that concept is to the Tekkadan.  They fight to survive; ethics and codes don’t enter into their considerations, so Wufei approaching those subjects would fray tempers fast.  And their refusal to listen to his input would tick Wufei off just as badly.

Duo would take personal offense at Eugene’s grumpiness and probably try to fix it.  He might at least not go after Mika once it became clear that Mika was even more likely to shoot him than Heero, but Eugene?  Eugene is getting teased until he loosens the heck up.  Eugene will not appreciate this.

the characters i think are the most alike

Kudelia and Relena start from a very similar place.  I feel like Kudelia is something like what I would have liked to see happen with Relena.

my favorite character from each fandom & how i think they would get along

Duo and Orga…they’d be dangerous.  Orga would have a plan and Duo would make suggestions of how to make it more effective but also like 2 times more risky (which is never a thing that Orga’s plans need to begin with, mind!) and it would work, because Duo is in fact that good, in addition to being an actual daredevil with a superweapon. Duo, meanwhile, loves Orga’s plans, though he does like to…embellish.  Usually with extra explosions.  Orga, who’s used to Mika following plans to the letter, doesn’t like this at first, but Duo’s additions usually work, and he learns to go with it.

[tumblr.com profile] hawk-in-a-tree asked: never have I ever written a haruka focuse story post-series (Kagepro)

Nope!  Not published anyway.  I started a snipped of one, might still be on the computer…

Ah, it was a false start for Uploaded On…; I’ll put it here since I’m not sure if I’ll do anything else with it or not.

When it’s all said and done, they bring Haruka home from the hospital to the red brick house, now nicely modified by Seto to be as wheelchair-friendly as a two-story building with no elevator can be.  He still can’t go upstairs, but they’ve moved everything but the bedrooms and the second bathroom downstairs, and they don’t have the budget for an elevator yet.  They’re saving up for one, though, because while the doctors are more optimistic now about treatments for his heart condition, they’re also hesitant about putting his body through the stress of the rehab he’d need to get back muscle tone in his legs after his “coma.”  Haruka, himself, isn’t sure how to feel about the possibility of using a wheelchair long-term or even permanently, but he’s pretty okay with the idea of not dying during physical therapy, so he’s focusing on that for now.

He’s not entirely sure who the red brick house actually belongs to, now–possibly, it’s Ayano’s. Everyone lives there a little bit, though. Ayano and Takane are the only permanent residents.  Shintarou is doing his best to move, but Haruka can see how hard just being outside is for him sometimes.  And Ayano’s siblings seem to love and hate the house by turns; after a few months, they settle into a pattern of visiting rather than staying over.  Mary, most of all, acts like a guest–Haruka thinks that seeing the siblings fall into old patterns with Ayano makes her feel just a bit outside.  The red brick house is also where Hibiya and Hiyori stay, on the rare occasions they come up.

It’s a good home, and Haruka loves it, but sometimes, in the middle of the day, when he’s got nothing to do, the others are all out, and he knows that scrolling the web isn’t going to satisfy him the way it does Shintarou–it feels lonely.

And then, for his first birthday after coming back, Momo and Seto pool their funds to buy him a Wacom tablet, and Shintarou absently reminds him that he used to have a pixiv account.

He doesn’t remember the pixiv account, but Takane kind of does, and Shintarou’s good at this sort of thing, so the three of them track it down and manage to get into it, and within a week Haruka’s account is as resurrected as he is.

(Kano’s sense of humor is rubbing off a little, maybe.)

He rereads some of the manga that he bookmarked fanart for, because his memories of most of them are blurry.  He approves of his younger self’s taste, mostly, though he’s a little embarrassed by some of it.

And then, while checking out some of the newer art, he finds a speedpaint, and thinks, I want to do that.

In retrospect, that is exactly when it starts.

Anonymous said: Personally I find it annoying that Gosho insists Magic Kaito and Detective Conan are separate because at this point how is that possible when KID has been directly involved in a Black Org arc?? Like...his involvement was pretty key to how it all unfolded in the end. And the connection between HIS family and the Kudos and Vermouth too...Also imo Akako having magic actually explains some things (Hattori's dream for example) so it's not like the connection doesn't make sense.

Yeah.  Honestly, for me, it’s Vermouth that I can’t get past.  Like, as much as I hate it, the single BO arc he got involved in was set up so it could have just been because of Shinichi.  But the whole implication that Toichi taught both Yukiko and Vermouth is plot-important in DC, at least insofar as Yukiko and Vermouth’s relationship.  And given that this is Vermouth, who is probably the most competent of the BO members (Gin is close but he’s not so great at successfully murdering people).  Like, is Gosho really trying to sell to us that Vermouth let a random criminal organization to which she had no connection kill her teacher, and then let them live afterward?  Because that seems odd to me.

I think at some point DC and MK were supposed to be happening in different universes, and then Gosho said something else, and honestly I have regretted every time I tried to pay attention to one of those interviews he does because half of what he says is confusing and sometimes he says things that are deliberately misleading.  As a fanwriter, at least, I’m going with the written canon, not with anything Gosho says outside of it.  And the written canon is unclear but implies the two organizations at least could be related, and definitely sets both series in the same world.

Besides, as far as magic is concerned, DC isn’t quite as logic-driven as we tend to think of it if you look close.  You pointed out Kazuha’s dreams; Heiji also has one that he at least thinks is supernatural during the Naniwa Serial Murders. Also, that omamori works, and on a pretty different level from what people expect from them in the real world, from what I know.  Conan seems to be able to sense murderers and also has a KID-radar.  Likewise, Ai can sense members of the BO.  And like, maybe with those last two Gosho is trying to imply that it’s reading body language, but it’s drawn like lowkey psychic powers.  There’s magic, or at least a lot of supernatural crap, in DCMK’verse, there always has been.
