w-ingsofwords)! You’ve mentioned Kuroko no Basuke to me as a series you particularly like, and that ended up giving me the idea for a Gundam 00 basketball AU. I don’t have a firm idea for an overall plot for the universe, but have some sketches, and some random thoughts for the story/character roles:

All of the Meisters were the best basketball player on their last team. Setsuna didn’t even play for a school team before this but whatever team he was on, he was still the best. There’s some friction between them, as a result.
Hong Long has some complicated family stuff going on that he’s trying to escape through basketball
Setsuna is probably trying to work through whether his tendency toward an aggressive, viciously competitive playstyle is really constructive (spoiler: it’s not)
Allelujah is trying to balance his mental health stuff and his commitment to basketball
Neil and Lyle’s complicated relationship is also an ongoing problem for the team, so the two of them are trying to work that out—Neil through toning down his “untouchable” perfection that’s often gained at the cost of taking unneeded risks/getting sports injuries, and Lyle by finding ways to define himself that aren’t based on his brother
Tieria is trying to learn how to have interests that he’s chosen for himself
Saji doesn’t start out being that serious about basketball, and thinks he’ll just sit on the bench all season, but seeing how important it is to everyone around him makes him want to start working harder at it
Ms. Sumeragi is the coach, and various members of the bridge crew work with her on things like designing the team’s training schedule, overseeing stretches, and working with injured players. Most of them are high school/college students who are interested in coaching or sports medicine.
Marie and Anew are members of the women’s basketball team at their institution, and at one point they challenge the men’s team to a game out of sheer spite because of the differences in how much each team gets funded. They don’t have a proper coach, but Marina Ismail has been acting as their faculty advisor, and Marie’s dad Sergei, who used to be a professional basketball player, has been giving them unofficial advice. After the game, they start sharing coaching staff with the guys.
One rival team is coached by Kati Mannequin, and includes star players Graham Aker and Billy Katagiri, and possibly some other A-Laws. Another is coached by Laguna Harvey and includes the Trinities. A third team is made up of the Innovades and they pretty much do what they want.

Everyone has their own ideas of what kind of music the characters like, and I honestly think it’s more fun that way, but I wanted to think about when the characters first experienced it, and how.

The Meisters vary a lot. Setsuna’s town probably had a few elders with old, near-broken instruments–and one or two nearly-broken radios that occasionally picked up a staticky music station or two. Neil and Lyle lived in an Irish city–they probably have childhood memories of going to family pubs with live musicians. Tieria’s first experience was probably another member of Celestial Being leaving their music playing in a common area. The first experience Allelujah remembers is probably soft classical music being piped through the sleeping quarters in an attempt to stimulate the young Super-Soldiers’ brain function. Saji’s first experience was probably children’s songs tapes.

The Trinities probably found a radio station entirely by accident while looking for information, and then liked it. Marina’s mother sang to her–she was probably where Marina got her love of singing from. I don’t want to go through the whole cast, but the idea intrigues me.

Both Lockons are intimidated by the sea of mental issues that is Celestial Being when they first join up. That said, Neil was honestly expecting it and eventually decides to rise to the challenge (see The Island of Misfit Toys). Lyle, on the other hand, did not sign up for this crap and is really, really confused. Especially about the way these people talk about his brother.

It was kind of acknowledged in the Dylandy family that, after the bombing, Neil was never quite…as they’d put it, “right in the head.” Nobody blamed him, and they tried to get him help, but—it was just how things were. Neil was touchy and kind of impulsive and prone to making bad decisions. Maybe Neil didn’t qualify for medications or therapy or anything (or maybe he just wouldn’t go), but Lyle certainly didn’t really see anyone mistaking him for normal anytime soon.

So, the point in his introduction to Celestial Being when Lyle realizes that his late brother was considered the sane one is kind of terrifying. But the evidence mounts. By all accounts, Neil was the person people went to for advice. Tieria appears to think he had some sort of mystical knowledge about what it means to be human—which makes Lyle take another look at the guy’s purple hair and red eyes and wonder. Setsuna seems to think he was a good model for how a person should live. Ms. Sumeragi, when she isn’t crying or asking for alcohol, misses his calming influence.
