Author Appreciation Week Day 2: Gundam 00
Jul. 14th, 2015 11:01 pm This fandom is small and a little dormant at the moment, but I’m not the only one who’d like to see it grow and get more active. Here are some of the people who’ve already done spectacular things.
Ita-Neo provided us all with proof positive that even in this fandom we can have humor. Pitch-perfect, in character humor that makes me grab friends who have literally never heard of any of these characters and still get them to laugh because the way Ita-Neo writes Graham is just hilarious and Billy is the ideal straight man. In conclusion, Please Shut Up is a sickfic—but one character wants angst/hurt/comfort and the other character just wants a freakin’ break.
Sophie3 is excellent at crafting a story. Even in a oneshot, her ability to set up events and dialogue shines. She writes everyone, particularly Tieria and Sumeragi, beautifully, and balances humor with characterization expertly. Her lone, rather old Gundam 00 fic, Mission: Team Building is my headcanon for the origin of Tieria’s sweater and no-one can take it away from me.
Laora is well known in a number of fandoms for her superior writing and her expert crafting of angst. Her Gundam fic is no exception. Introspection and symbolism abounds, the descriptions pull you into the text…and if you don’t feel like someone just punched you in the stomach at some point in the story, you’re a bit more resilient than I am. Her Dylandy-centric fic heavens turn away as the skies come crashing down has season two spoilers, is absolutely lovely, and will also hurt your heart. You’ve been warned.
panda_hiiro is amazing at dialogue. I haven’t read all of her fic, but what I have read earns her my respect. April 7, 2329 is set post-canon, and thus spoils everything, but suffice it to say that she manages to make a conversation between two very stoic characters just expressive enough to be interesting to read and even somewhat cute, without ever letting them fall out of character.
Kiriska starts their only Gundam fic so far with an arresting summary and don’t let up from there. They use descriptions and choppy paragraphs to increase the tension and write Hallelujah in a way that’s both terrifying and very, very plausible given what we see of him in canon. Given that Hallelujah Chorus is about Allelujah’s backstory and Hallelujah—well, those right there are the warnings, aren’t they?
