People remember where they were when Aeolia Schenberg’s message aired, or when they first heard about it–not everyone has a TV, obviously, but everyone eventually got word and everyone remembers when.

Fifty years later, Louise and Saji tell the next generation’s kids about standing around that big-screen TV in their school, casually curious and baffled all at once.  Over such a distance of years, it seems to them that the moment had some deep significance, that they somehow knew it would change everything.

But really, at the time, Saji was nervous but sure that this would blow over, that the old man on television was making promises he wouldn’t be able to keep.  And Louise was more worried about the test she had later that week than some grainy footage full of dramatic pronouncements.

Everyone remembers, because, at the time, everyone thought it was weird, a story to tell their children for sure.  And it was.  But it was a different story than they expected.

Louise Halevy wasn’t the only civilian who tried to join the A-Laws, but she was one of very few that succeeded.  After the various countries’ militaries were disbanded, the A-Laws were flooded with applications from both career soldiers and veterans of various stripes who believed in what they were doing.  So anyone who was even allowed to take the mental and physical qualifying tests had already beaten out a large pool of applicants.

In reality, it her success came in large part from Ribbon’s Almark’s political support through the selection process, but from the outside, it looked like it was all her terrifying determination.  Because she was still skinny and sickly-looking, and on top of that it was clear that she’d never been on a military obstacle course in her life (who tries to go over the net?) but she did not give up.  Even if she had to ask two dozen questions, it took her twice as long as everyone else and she ended up passing out afterwards, she finished every task set for her.

When she made it into training, some of the other A-Laws were confused at first, because there was a tiny, angry, blonde girl who did not seem to know which end of an automatic rifle was the barrel in training with them, and that couldn’t be right. Except that it only took her one or two explanations to get the hang of disassembling and reassembling the thing, and while she still held it like she wasn’t sure it belonged in her hands, she could definitely shoot.  They didn’t know who she was picturing when she looked at the target paper but they were all very glad it wasn’t them.
